About the match
After a strong start in their inaugural season, the Dolphins faced the harsh reality of NRL competition, missing out on the top eight due to depth issues exacerbated by injuries and suspensions. Heading into 2024, they’ve bolstered their squad with key signings like Thomas Flegler, Herbie Farnworth, and Jake Averillo. Farnworth and Averillo are poised to form a dynamic new centre pairing, injecting pace and skill into the backline. Jack Bostock is tipped to secure a wing position, potentially edging out Tesi Niu. Kodi Nikorima, despite being a constant presence last season, faces stiff competition from Sean O'Sullivan for a spot in the starting lineup, with Ray Stone also in the mix for the utility role. The backrow options for coach Wayne Bennett are abundant, featuring Felise Kaufusi, Kenny Bromwich, Connelly Lemuelu, and Euan Aitken. Tom Flegler’s addition to the forward pack and Tom Gilbert’s return at lock after an impressive but injury-shortened season further strengthen the team's core. The Cowboys, having experienced a dip in 2023, are focused on a resurgence. With the departure of Peta Hiku being their only major roster change, coach Todd Payten has a largely settled squad. Viliami Vailea is expected to fill Hiku's shoes in the centres, offering fresh energy and talent. Kyle Feldt, having found himself out of the side at times last season, faces a battle to reclaim a regular spot. The forward pack remains robust, led by Jordan McLean and supported by Coen Hess and Griffin Neame. Kulikefu Finefeuiaki, although unlikely to feature in the opening round, is a player to watch as the season progresses. The team has new leadership in co-captains Reuben Cotter and Tom Dearden, signalling a fresh approach and renewed focus. Be sure to also keep an eye on Nanai this year. After making his Origin and Test debuts in a breakout 2022, Nanai came back to the field last year as two suspensions and a shoulder injury ripped a hole in his season, but he’ll be ready to fire on all cylinders in 2024.
